Literacy and Mathematics
We give priority to the teaching of literacy and mathematics in our curriculum. We set high achievement expectations by aiming for 95% of children to reaching national guidelines by the end of each year. We test and teach to individual needs in reading, writing and mathematics. We cross group in mathematics to facilitate meeting individual needs and to better allow for extension and learning support. Digital technologies and thinking skills are integrated in all programmes to lift learning....[more]

Electives Programme
This schoolwide programme allows children to engage in deeper learning in a curriculum area they have a passion for. For one day a week for a whole term they meet with a teacher who offers skill and passion in that area. Subjects offered include Science, Technology, Spanish, French, Dance and Drama, PE and Health, Visual Art, ICT, Music, Te Reo, Enviro studies, Music and Social Science....[more]

Arts Programmes
Visual art, music, dance and drama learning is not only taught in classes but is also offered through the 'Arts' classes in our Electives Programme. Children have opportunities to join a variety of arts groups including instrument tuition groups at school. These groups include two school choirs, dance group, ukelele orchestra, kapa haka and two school bands. Our senior band performs to a high standard for a Primary School Band and has won several awards....[more]

Environmental Education
We are an Enviro school and won a National Green Gold Award in 2006 for our initiatives. We have student designed cultural gardens, a restored gully, compost recycling, a worm farm, marketing of worm juice, paper reycling, enviro sculptures, an eco nursery, enviro student planned play areas. 
 We have an Enviro student council and an Enviro teacher who work together to address Enviro issues in the school. Our latest project is designing and building an Eco Classroom. See link below....[more]

Digital Learning
We believe children's learning is enhanced when digital technologies are integrated across the curriculum. They allow children to access and manipulate information as well as develop creative skills as they make movies, web pages and digital presentations. Every class has a digital camera, digital projector and several computers as well as other technologies to allow for equitable access to technologies for all students. A Thinking Culture
We want to develop a thinking culture at Hukanui so our children learn to be reflective, adaptive learners. We actively teach thinking skills and integrate them in all curriculum areas. Teachers are trained to teach thinking and in this photograph you can see our parents learning about thinking skills as well. So we are all learning together....[more]

Outdoor Education
We have a schoolwide outdoor education programme that builds children's skills and confidence. All children have a camp experience every year from Year 4 to Year 6. These are in a variety of settings and all seniors have the opportunity to try kayaking, abseiling, rock climbing, tenting and more. Year 6 children can be extended through our Option Programme where they can try either snow skiing, caving, yachting, indoor rock climbing, horse riding and more....[more]

Health and Physical Education
We learn to live safely and make wise choices for living and eating through our health programmes. Children have regular physical activity and we integrate thinking skills through developing games for understanding. House Sports competitions run at lunchtimes and Senior Sports Mentors take games for the Juniors. Our senior pupils also enjoy the adventure of playing in our native bush gully area at lunchtime....[more]

Sharing Our Learning
Learning isn't much use if we don't use what we learn or share it. We give lots of opportunities for children to share their learning with their families and with a wider audience. We have sharing nights, elective open days, 3 way learning conferences, Greats and Grands day and more events. Dyslexia - 4D Programme
Hukanui School recognises that dyslexia and other learning differences can have a significant impact on school life. Our school is committed to addressing this, and we are proud to be part of the Dyslexia Foundation's 4D | For Dyslexia programme which enables schools to make meaningful changes to help dyslexic students succeed....[more]
