Student Safety and Wellbeing in New Zealand
Hukanui School is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students as required by the New Zealand Government. The Code of Practice ensures a very high standard of care for International Students studying in New Zealand and all schools are monitored by the government to ensure they are complying with the Code. The New Zealand Government Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2021 is available here in a range of languages.
Pastoral Care
The Deputy Principal Susan Johnson, Principal Leo Spaans and International Student Director Pam Webb take a personal interest in each student’s well-being and are available during the school day for students to talk to. All staff members at Hukanui are very caring and will happily assist any student at any time.
Behaviour Expectations
At Hukanui School staff maintain positive learning environments and relationships with students and we make a clear statement of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour known to all staff, parents and students. As part of the enrolment process, parents and the international student will be asked to sign our Behaviour Policy Acceptance statement. We have high expectations for all students, and this ensures a shared commitment to a positive learning environment.
Eligibility for Health Services
Most International students are not entitled to publicity funded health services while in New Zealand. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website https://www.health.govt.nz/
Medical and Travel Insurance are compulsory for ALL international students studying in New Zealand. Evidence of an appropriate insurance policy (in English) is part of our school enrolment process.
